SEPT 8, 2019 - ROCKET II - ELMAR - DELORES: A FEW PICS FROM THE LATE 1950s in BACK IN THE DAY IN SHEEPSHEAD BAY

Thanks to Frank for passing these incredibly sharp pics along from "Back in the Day!"

The old Bay which include the Subchasers Elmar and Rocket. They appear to be from the late 1950s. Notice no radar on any of the boats and the buildings and stacks of the old merchant marine academy were Kingsboro college is now.

Also it appears that after their well know virtual disappearance during the previous couple of decades Bluefish had cycled up again and become plentiful enough that even the small 45 footers were Bluefishing daily.
Look at the crowd coming off the Elmar and the crowd of people on the dock at both the Elmar and Delores checking out the catch and looking to buy fish.

===============

From Mel Deak..........

Captain Dave 'Laddie' Martin's "ROCKET II" was built in 1942 at Atlantic City, NJ as the 104-foot US Navy Air-Sea Rescue Boat "P-106". She was converted for party boat fishing after the end of World War II and sailed as the "SILVER STAR" before joining the Sheepshead Bay fleet in 1953. The "ROCKET II" was sold in 1967 to Captain Matthew Hughes and joined his Boston Harbor Cruise Fleet at Boston, MA where she continued to sail as a party fishing boat until relocated to the Bahamas in 1974.

Captain Patrick 'Patsie' Zucco's "DOLORES II" from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY. The boat was built in 1922 at Astoria, NY as Captain Max Pollak's "IDA II" and first sailed from Stahle's Pier at Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY. She became the "DOLORES II" in 1949, and was removed from documentation and dismantled in 1966.

The "ELMAR" sailed from Pier 9 at Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY and was first operated by Captain Frank Rau and later by Captain Donald Dragonetti. The "ELMAR" was a World War II Subchaser built in 1943 at Dorchester, MA as the "SC-1329". She made her maiden voyage from Sheepshead Bay on July 3, 1949 along with her sister ship, Captain Fred Wrege's "EFFORT". The "ELMAR" foundered in 1979 off the St. Johns River in Florida.
