One of the points I can pass along here that these halibut are being caught on either Norwegian style or dimpled hammered jigs, with this fish caught on a Norwegian jig tipped with a mackerel chunk! Yes go figure, but there is also another point of where it is being in the right place at the right time as the fish was hooked after a few bounces of the jig on the bottom.
The halibut was caught on an outfit that has already had 4 keepers put into the boat, and the reel is the newer version of the Daiwa Saltiga.
One thing we have noticed even on the VOYAGER Nantucket trips is not to be "under-gunned" with your tackle, especially with the rod.
Interestingly enough, a few others were hooked into and lost on the drift and we have also seen this on the VOYAGER Nantucket Shoals trip where a keeper halibut is caught while another fishermen or two end up getting rocked off the deck and their line being spooled for a few moments and broken, or the halibut lost on the way up.
Anyhow this was a few tips to pass along in this thread, and it is looking once again as another productive season for rod and reel fishermen to possible hook into and land this very special fish.
