We made our annual Memorial Day Weekend Nantucket COD, POLLOCK, HAKE AND HADDOCK TRIP this past weekend and what a trip it was! The weather was in constant flux the days before the trip but a favorable forecast Friday morning made the trip a "go".
We arrived on the grounds just after sun up finding only moderate wind and seas. We anchored up and immediately heard calls for the gaff coming from the bow. Then a few calls from mid-ships and the stern. We were soon catching a mix of COD and POLLOCK with a few WHITE Hake mixed in.
The fish were caught on both bait and jigs.
We bounced around all day finding some wrecks to be better than others, and some that were just duds.
On day-2 of the trip we focused on jigging COD and HADDOCK.
The fish started biting early in the morning but slowed as the current started to run hard. We made a short move and found the mother load of HADDOCK. Fish were coming up all around the boat on both bait and jigs with double headers common.
There were some COD but mostly HADDOCK.
In the middle of the day we hooked something much larger...
The large fish ended up being a 36 pound ATLANTIC HALIBUT caught by Andre Mezzasalma of Virginia. We hooked a few more HALIBUT through the day but were unable to get any to the surface. When everyone had full coolers we started for home.
I really can't say enough about the trip. We caught COD, POLLOCK, HADDOCK, HALIBUT, WHITE HAKE, RED HAKE, SILVER HAKE, FLUKE, and even a MONKFISH!
I've urged people to jump on these trips while we're still allowed to do them and I'm happy to say that those that did were all very happy.
We still have three more trips left this season,
- July - 6:00 PM Thu. July 19
- August - 6:00 PM Thu. August 16
On the July and August trips we plan to spend a good bit of the first day fishing for JUMBO NANTUCKET FLUKE.

A much more detailed report with additional photos will be published on the FISHING UNITED .com website in just a few days. I'll send out an e-mail when the article goes up.
Captain Denis had the boat out today for the daily SEA BASS trip and, after a slow start, he put a decent catch together. He had plenty of short action and enough keepers to keep it interesting. A number of folks had their limits.
Our next daily Open Boat SEA BASS trips are:
- Wednesday morning at 7:30AM and
- Friday morning MARATHON at 6:30AM
In June we have room on our 1.5-and 2-day TILEFISH & TILEFISH/ROSEFISH COMBO TRIPS. We also have had a few spots open up on our June 17th WORLD RECORD TILEFISH HUNT if anyone is interested.
We still have room on our 2.5-day NANTUCKET COD WRECK AND JIGGING TRIP leaving Thursday June 21 at 6PM. I can't stress enough that the government may close this fishery down in the near future so come out while you still can!
