Yesterday, joined by Assemblyman Dean Murray, small business owners and local fishermen at my Press Conference in Patchogue, I called for the State of New York to take a stand against an unfair decision by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) to cut NY's black sea bass allocation by 12% (even though the black sea bass stock has rebounded and is currently 240% above target biomass), while increasing that of neighboring states.

By issuing its own set of regulations for black sea bass fishing this season and entering into non-compliance, the State of New York can take a stand against the inequitable decision of the ASMFC that will further hurt New York’s already struggling anglers. This method was successfully used in the State of New Jersey last year to fight similar regulations and we hope New York chooses to do the same.

Joe Tangel, captain and owner of the Center Moriches charterboat company King Cod, said his job is the only source of income supporting his family of four.

“We cannot stand around any longer,” he said. “No cuts or no compliance.”

NEWSDAY (4.9.18): Fishing quotas on black sea bass draw lawmakers’ ire Elected officials and anglers urged Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to get involved in the dispute with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.
